George Volkoff (1914-2000) was a Russian-Canadian physicist.

He was one of J. Robert Oppenheimer’s first Ph.D. students at the University of California, Berkeley. Together, the two men wrote a paper that pioneered the world’s understanding of neutron stars for the next several decades.

During the war Volkoff, a naturalized Canadian citizen, was recruited to work on that country’s heavy water project at the Montreal Laboratory. Following its conclusion he remained in Canada as a professor at the University of British Columbia.
