On December 3, 2012 the New York Times (NYT) published an article, “Bid to Preserve Manhattan Project Sites in a Park Stirs Debate,” on the proposed Manhattan Project National Historical Park. The article focuses on the importance of passing the legislation to preserve some of the properties and artifacts from the Manhattan Project.
NYT science reporter Bill Broad features the Pond Cabin in Los Alamos, where Emilio Segrè researched the behavior of the recently discovered plutonium. Segrè’s work at the Pond Cabin was critical to the design of the “Gadget” tested at Trinity Site and the first atomic bombs.
In the article, Atomic Heritage Foundation President Cindy Kelly and National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis express their support for the Park. Kelly explains, “It’s a way to help educate the next generation.” Jarvis said in a statement, “The National Park Service will be proud to interpret these Manhattan Project sites and unlock their stories in the years ahead.”
National Public Radio (NPR) did a story on December 4, 2012 on the debate over the Park, “Manhattan Project Sites Part of Proposed Park.” NPR quotes Los Alamos Historical Society Executive Director Heather McClenahan and Los Alamos National Laboratory historian Ellen McGehee who strongly advocate creating a national park. “It’s a chance to say, ‘Why did we do this? How do we learn lessons from the past?’” McClenahan says.
