Lieutenant William Dodd was recruited for the Manhattan Project while recuperating from injuries received in the 1943 invasion of Bougainville Island in the South Pacific.  He served as a hi-level courier and was responsible for transporting sensitive materials and documents between Manhattan Project locations.  In 1945 he was appointed Executive Officer of the Special Engineer Detachment at Oak Ridge.
