Mark S. Fred

Mark Fred was a research assistant in the chemistry division of the University of Chicago’s Metallurgical Laboratory (“Met Lab”) during the Manhattan Project. 

He was also one of seventy scientists to sign the Szilard Petition. Written by physicist Leo Szilard, the document petitioned the President to decide against dropping the atomic bomb on Japan.

Later, he worked in the Chemistry Division of Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, Illinois. While at Argonne, he published and co-published a number of papers about spectrography of the actinide elements.
