John C. Warner

John “Jake” Warner was an American chemist and the President of the Carnegie Institute of Technology, today known as Carnegie Mellon University.

Warner was born on May 28, 1897 in Goshen, Indiana. He received an A.B., an M.A., and a Ph.D. from Indiana University. He went on to accept a teaching position at the Carnegie Institute of Technology.

In 1943, Warner was hired to work on the Manhattan Project to supervise work on plutonium chemistry and metallurgy. He was based at the Chicago Met Lab, but frequently made trips to Oak Ridge and Los Alamos.

After the war, Warner went back to Carnegie to teach. In 1950, he would be named president of the university.

Warner died on April 12, 1989, in Pittsburgh.
