Frederick J. Shon (1926-2000) worked on the Manhattan Project at Columbia University.

Born in New York City in 1926, Shon was recruited to work on the Manhattan Project while pursuing his undergraduate degree at Columbia. He graduated from Columbia in 1946 and afterwards did postgraduate work at Ohio State University and the University of California, Berkeley. In 1952, Shon began working as a physicist and reactor operations supervisor at the Radiation Laboratory at Livermore, California (now Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory).

Nine years later, Shon moved to Washington, DC to join the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. He served as Chief of the Reactor Safety Branch of the Division of Operational Safety and as Assistant Director of Nuclear Facilities. Beginning in 1972, Shon worked for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, where he served as deputy chief administrative judge on the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board Panel.

Shon passed away on August 29, 2000 at the age of 74.
