National Museum of Nuclear Science & History

Frank Foote was the Principal Metallurgist at the Manhattan Project’s Metallurgical Laboratory at the University of Chicago. He went on to become the Director of Argonne National Laboratory’s Metallurgy Division.

Frank G. Foote was born in 1906. In 1930, Foote received his master’s degree in chemistry from Ohio State University. For graduate school, he attended Columbia University. In 1941, he received his Ph.D. in metallurgy from Columbia. His studies focused on the structure of solids using X-ray diffraction. 

In 1943, Foote joined the Met Lab as its Principal Metallurgist. Following World War II, he returned to Columbia’s School of Mines in May 1946. Later, he became the Director of Argonne National Laboratory’s Metallurgy Division. He served as director from 1948 until 1966. 

Frank Foote died on November 17, 1998.
