The Oregonian Calls for Hanford Cleanup, Preservation of History

The editorial board of The Oregonian called for the cleanup of Hanford and the preservation of its history on Tuesday, February 9, 2010. The board wrote in anticipation of the public meeting hosted by the Department of Energy yesterday on its latest Hanford cleanup plan. The op-ed urges local residents to fight federal efforts to use Hanford as one of the nation's radioactive waste dump sites. It also notes the growing support in the region and nationwide for creating a Manhattan Project National Historical Park at Hanford, citing near-unanimous support for the park at the public meeting held by the Park Service two weeks ago. The board concludes:
"No one is suggesting that the B Reactor be converted into a children's playground, or claiming that Hanford can become a Yosemite on the banks of the Columbia. But Hanford is a unique place that played a significant part in this country's nuclear history. It should be cleaned up and added to America's national historic park system."
